I want to like it but the pro shop staff was rude and unfriendly and this was not my first time at this course. Each time has been the same.

I've been a member at Western Skies for seven months, and my timing for discovering this track must have been perfect. New owners took over about two months after I joined, and they are working very hard to get the course into great shape. The improvements since I joined are obvious, but in about six more months -- maybe a little longer -- this is going to be one fine little place to play. The info in the "course bio" is a little outdated, too. According to the Arizona Golf Association, the rating/slope from the back tees is 70.6/123 and 68.3/114 from the middle. There are a couple of challenging holes: 4, 8, and 12, and several pretty easy holes. The worst thing about the course at the moment is the condition of the bunkers and some of the rough areas. All of that is being addressed, and I expect to "uncheck" Condition of the Course as a Con in the not-too-distant-future. The staff at Western Skies, both in the shop and in Mulligan's Grill, is friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. In fact, the staff is the primary reason I joined when I did, because back then the course needed a lot of attention. But I knew it was going to get it, and it did. Anyone who is "local" and can join would be well advised to do so. It is clearly one of the best bargains in the game, assuming you can play four or five times a month. I don't know about the rates otherwise, but I assume they are fair, and there are always bargains available online. Bottom line for me: a nice little track with a great staff and a great future.

I golf all over, and this was the worst experience ever. I decided to try this course for the first time over 4th of July Weekend last year. The day started out great, until I received the golf cart. This particular cart was in disrepair, and would not steer from the beginning, to the point that a tree was bumped right off the first tee. I did get a new cart, and started to play again. I found the course in pretty poor condition, looking more like an outright desert course, greens included. I was already unimpressed. At the 9th hole, the marshal came out and stated that the management wanted to see me in the clubhouse. They not only wanted me to pay for their faulty equipment, and when I stated that the cart was bad from the start, the POLICE were called. I am still dealing with the courts over these guys. So, if you want this level of hassle, feel free to golf there. Otherwise, I would go elsewhere.

Fun little course if you can find a bargain, regular rates are too much. Try golfnow.com,teetimewatch.com, etc. The fairways and greens, especially the greens, need a lot of work. Some of the greens have very large brown spots that don't putt very well. The fairways are really mushy and hard to hit off. The ambiance and practice facilities are exceptional, however, and partially make up for the condition of the course.

I play this course at least twice a week. I have always found the staff to be couteous of helpful. Pace of play can be an issue on good weather days, which says a lot for the course, there is a big demand to get out and play it. I have lived in the area for 14 years and I have seen this course go from a rag tag goat ranch to a suitable playing course with some very challenging holes (shortest par 3 is still 180yds from the tips). Some great improvements and the Mulligans grill has made a substantial turn around. It is a great place for pretty much any event, nice place!! The folks are very friendly, its like a second home to me.

We played on a Sunday afternoon and there were virtually no other golfers around, very nice pace of play obviously, and the course was in good post-overseed winter condition.

While Western Skies may not be at the top of your list to play while in the Phoenix area, it still is a fun course to play and the price is substantially lower than surrounding courses. It has an interesting layout with hazards and OB around the whole course. Mostly, the greens are where you will lose strokes or make them up. Lots of undulation and slope. Fun course to play!
